Presentation of a framework for understanding the relationship between Christian symbols (covenant, sacrament, vocation, and communion) to the “subjects” of marriage and family (self, couple, family, and household), and the forms of social relationships (hierarchical, egalitarian, and organic). Concludes with a proposal for a contemporary theology of marriage and family.
